👉 In this story, we show how a simple family beach day can turn into a successful fishing adventure – even if your original plan was just to swim!
Family fishing at sea can seem challenging – especially in the middle of summer, when the beaches are full and the sun is high. But sometimes, unexpected conditions lead to unforgettable moments. Summer in the Bay of Kotor – just like the rest of the Adriatic – offers everything sea lovers dream of: crystal-clear water, rocky coastline, and peaceful landscapes. And while most people seek shade and shallow water around noon, we used our family outing in Orahovac for something different. What started as a casual day by the sea ended with a 2.5 kg Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) on the hook!
Fishing at Noon – When No One Expects a Catch

Family fishing at sea
Most experienced anglers will tell you: summer and noon are not the best times for fishing. They’re usually right – the fish are slower and the sea is crowded. But family fishing at sea is not just about the catch. It’s about sharing time with your kids, teaching them something new, and – if you’re lucky – experiencing the thrill of a surprise catch.
That’s exactly what happened to us that day. We chose a quiet spot, away from the busy beaches and swimming zones. It was the perfect place for both swimming and fishing, without disturbing anyone.
The Setup, the Bait – and a Bit of Luck
We used a simple but effective shore fishing setup – a sliding sinker, fluorocarbon leader, and a live baitfish. The bait was a small bogue (Boops boops), caught earlier by my son using a basic float rod and some bread.

We cast the bait a bit farther from the shore, letting it swim naturally on the seabed. The fluorocarbon leader made the setup nearly invisible in the clear water – a small detail that can make a big difference in summer conditions.
And then it happened – a sudden pull, strong resistance, and a few minutes of pure adrenaline. My son and I landed the beautiful 2.5 kg Atlantic bonito together. It was his first “real” fish – a memory we’ll both cherish for years to come.
Family fishing at sea – more than just fishing

Fishing with children isn’t always about the catch. Sometimes, it’s about sharing quiet moments, watching the waves, and just being present. But when a fish bites – it becomes a moment they’ll never forget.
Family fishing at sea doesn’t require expensive gear or special planning. A couple of rods, a few rigs, a bit of patience, and a quiet corner of the coastline are often enough. And on the Adriatic coast such places are easy to find.

Where to Go for a Peaceful Experience
What many visitors forget is that the Adriatic coastline is rugged and full of small, hidden spots. While some beaches are crowded with tourists, others offer peaceful rocky stretches where you can enjoy both swimming and fishing. Look for spots where the sea drops off quickly and you can cast your line without being in the way. Even if fishing wasn’t part of your original plan – these hidden corners make it easy to turn any day at the beach into an opportunity for adventure.
Conclusion – Family Fishing at Sea Is a Memory Maker

Our little adventure in Orahovac reminded us that fishing doesn’t have to be a full expedition to be rewarding. It can be spontaneous, simple, and shared with family, and still result in an incredible story – and a great dinner!
Whether you’re visiting Montenegro, Croatia, or anywhere along the Adriatic coast, there’s always a quiet spot to enjoy family fishing at sea. Swim, relax, fish, and create moments your family will never forget.
