Dentex Fishing – Season and Best Techniques in the Adriatic

Dentex Fishing in the Adriatic

Dentex – the King of the Adriatic

The dentex (Dentex dentex) is one of the most prized fish in the Adriatic Sea. Its strength, fighting spirit and delicious taste make it a dream catch for every angler. Dentex fishing is considered the highlight of sport fishing in the region, and landing a large specimen is an unforgettable experience. Besides its sporting value, dentex is also a healthy fish from the Adriatic Sea, rich in nutrients and an important part of the Mediterranean diet.

When Does Dentex Fishing Start?

Dentex fishing usually begins at the end of summer and lasts throughout autumn. This is when the chances for trophy catches are the highest:

  • Water temperature – as the sea cools down after summer, baitfish move closer to the shore, and dentex follows its prey.
  • Feeding season – after spawning, dentex enters a period of intense feeding in autumn, which makes it less cautious and more likely to strike a bait.

That is why experienced anglers say autumn is the best time for dentex fishing.

Where to Find Dentex?

To make dentex fishing successful, it’s crucial to know where to search. Dentex usually holds around:

  • rocky bottoms,
  • underwater reefs and drop-offs,
  • steep edges where depth changes suddenly.

In autumn, dentex often comes closer to shallower grounds, so you don’t always have to fish at great depths.

Best Techniques for Dentex Fishing

1. Trolling with Live Squid

Trolling is the most popular method for dentex fishing.

  • Bait: live squid.
  • How it works: the squid is trolled slowly (around 1 knot) with lead weights or a downrigger, usually at 10–30 m depth.
  • Advantage: covers large areas and helps locate active fish.

2. Bottom Fishing from a Boat (with Live Bait)

A highly effective method for dentex fishing.

  • Bait: live mullet (Mugil cephalus), or sometimes Saddled seabream (Oblada melanurus).
  • How it works: anchor the boat near a reef or slope and lower the live bait on a sliding sinker rig so it swims naturally near the bottom.
  • Advantage: natural presentation that attracts larger dentex.

3. Vertical Jigging

This modern technique is becoming more common in dentex fishing around the Mediterranean.

  • Lures: metal jigs (60–120 g).
  • How it works: drop the jig to the bottom and lift it with sharp jerks to mimic a wounded fish.
  • Note: requires special tackle and experience but can be very rewarding.

4. Spearfishing for Dentex

For spearfishers, dentex is one of the ultimate challenges.

  • Often hunted by ambush (waiting) or stealth approaches.
  • Demands skill, stamina, and patience.
  • Allowed only with proper license and respecting regulations.

5. Dentex Fishing from the Shore

Although most dentex fishing happens from boats, it can also be done from the shore.
One proven method is using live bogue as bait, placed on the bottom with a sliding sinker.

This technique has brought me success in the past near the island of St. George in Perast. However, due to the constant traffic of boats and speedboats carrying tourists to the island, the location is no longer peaceful for fishing.

That’s why I’ll be trying the same setup at new spots in Boka Bay, where calm waters still offer a chance for serious dentex fishing. Shore fishing requires patience and a good choice of location but can be just as exciting as fishing from a boat.

Tips for Successful Dentex Fishing

  • The best time is early morning or late afternoon.
  • Silence and patience are key – dentex is very cautious.
  • Use strong but thin lines or braided line, as dentex can sense resistance.
  • Activity peaks around the full moon and new moon phases.
